Lake Tanganyika, Gombe, Mahale & Kigoma Town

The safari also includes time in Kigoma town, where you can explore local markets, visit historical areas like Ujiji, interact with friendly communities, and experience authentic culture.
DAY 1: Arrival in Tanzania & Transfer to Arusha Town
Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport, you will be warmly welcomed by our friendly safari representative who will assist you with your luggage and brief you about the start of the adventure. You will then be transferred by road to Arusha, a vibrant safari gateway town set at the foot of Mount Meru. Along the way, enjoy your first views of Tanzania beautiful countryside, local villages, and changing landscapes as you ease into the rhythm of Tanzania.
Upon arrival at your lodge, you will check in and have ample time to relax and refresh after your journey. Take a stroll around the lodge grounds, unwind in the tranquil surroundings, or simply rest in preparation for the exciting days ahead. In the evening, enjoy a freshly prepared dinner served in a peaceful atmosphere before settling in for a comfortable overnight stay.
DAY 2: Arusha to Gombe Stream National Park
Today you start your journey early with a flight from Arusha to Kigoma, a small town on the shores of Lake Tanganyika. The flight is quick and gives you a great view of northern and western Tanzania from the air. After arriving in Kigoma, you continue by boat across Lake Tanganyika to reach Gombe National Park, a remote and peaceful park known for its wild chimpanzees.
During the boat ride, you can enjoy the clear blue water, forested hills, and the calm lake breeze. Upon arrival at Gombe, you check in at your lodge or camp and take some time to relax after the travel. The rest of the day is free to enjoy the beautiful surroundings, watch the lake, and prepare for the chimpanzee trekking that begins tomorrow. Evenings here are very quiet, filled with the sounds of nature and the gentle waves.
DAYS 3 & 4: Gombe Chimpanzee Trekking
These two days are fully dedicated to exploring the forest of Gombe National Park and spending time with its wild chimpanzees. Each morning, after an early breakfast, you set out with an experienced guide along forest trails that wind through steep hills, thick green trees, and along scenic ridges overlooking Lake Tanganyika. The walks can sometimes be challenging, but the fresh air, forest sounds, birds singing, and occasional views of the lake make the trek very enjoyable. Along the way, your guide points out interesting plants, birds, and other small wildlife, giving you a deeper sense of the park’s rich ecosystem.
The highlight of these days is, of course, the chimpanzees. You have multiple opportunities to watch them feeding, grooming, playing, and interacting with their families. You may see mothers carrying babies, groups resting in the trees, or young chimps swinging energetically between branches.
Your guides share fascinating stories about their behavior and the history of Jane Goodall’s work in the park, making every sighting more meaningful.
Between treks, there is time to relax at your lodge or camp, enjoy lunch, or take a swim in the clear waters of the lake. You can also take short walks along the shore, watch the birds, or simply sit and enjoy the quiet beauty of the forest. Evenings are peaceful and magical, with the sounds of nature all around, giving you the perfect chance to reflect on the amazing wildlife experiences of the day while enjoying dinner and stunning sunsets over Lake Tanganyika.
DAY 5: Gombe to Mahale Mountains National Park
Today you leave Gombe National Park and set out on a scenic boat journey across Lake Tanganyika to reach Mahale Mountains National Park, one of the most remote and beautiful parks in Tanzania. The ride along the lake takes a few hours and is full of stunning views. You will see the clear blue water stretching for miles, green hills and forested slopes along the shoreline, and a variety of birds flying over the water. The calm breeze and peaceful surroundings make the journey relaxing and a perfect chance to enjoy the natural beauty of western Tanzania.
When you arrive at Mahale, you check into your lodge or camp and take some time to settle in and rest after the journey. The area is quiet and untouched, with mountains rising sharply from the lake and forested paths waiting to be explored. You can take a gentle walk along the lakeshore, enjoy the beautiful scenery, take photos, or simply relax and watch the lake. This day is perfect for soaking in the calm and peaceful atmosphere, listening to the sounds of birds and the gentle waves, and preparing for the exciting chimpanzee trekking and forest adventures that start the next day. The evening here is magical, with colorful sunsets over the lake and mountains.
DAYS 6 & 7: Mahale Chimp Trekking
These two days are all about exploring Mahale Mountains National Park and spending time with wild chimpanzees. Each morning, after breakfast, you walk with a guide through the forest and mountains along Lake Tanganyika. The trails can go uphill and through thick trees, but the fresh air, birds, and beautiful lake views make the walk very enjoyable. Your guide will also show you interesting plants, birds, and small animals along the way.
The best part is seeing the chimpanzees. You can watch them play, eat, groom, and care for their babies. Over these two days, you have many chances to see different groups and enjoy their fun and natural behavior. Between walks, you can rest at your lodge, swim in the lake, or take short walks along the shore. Evenings are quiet and peaceful, with the sounds of the forest and water around you, making it a perfect time to enjoy the sunset and think about the amazing experiences of the day.
DAY 8: Mahale to Kigoma
Today you leave the quiet forests and mountains of Mahale Mountains National Park and take a scenic boat ride back across Lake Tanganyika to reach Kigoma town. The journey on the lake is calm and peaceful, with clear blue water stretching as far as the eye can see, green hills and forests along the shoreline, and plenty of birds flying overhead. The fresh lake breeze, the gentle sound of waves, and the wide-open views make the trip very relaxing. Along the way, you can take photos, spot water birds or even small wildlife along the edges of the forest, and enjoy one last connection with the beautiful natural surroundings of western Tanzania.
When you arrive in Kigoma, you check in at your lodge or hotel and have time to unwind after the boat ride. You can take a slow walk along the lakeshore, enjoy the stunning views, visit the local markets, or simply sit by the water and watch the boats move across the lake. The town is calm and friendly, giving you a chance to experience local life and culture. As the sun sets, the sky over the lake fills with color, making it a peaceful and magical evening with delightful dinner and peaceful overnight.
DAY 9: Kigoma Town & Ujiji Tour
Today is a slow and easy day to enjoy Kigoma and the historic town of Ujiji, both set on the beautiful shores of Lake Tanganyika. After breakfast, you take a guided walk through Kigoma town, exploring local streets, colorful markets, and the lakeside areas where fishermen bring in their daily catch. Along the way, you meet friendly local people, see how they live, and get a real feel of daily life in this quiet and peaceful lakeside town. You can stop to take photos, taste local foods, or simply enjoy the calm energy of the town.
In the afternoon, you visit Ujiji, a small town with a very important place in history. Ujiji is famous as the spot where Dr. David Livingstone met Henry Morton Stanley, and you can see the memorial and other historic areas. Walking along the shores, you can enjoy the wide views of Lake Tanganyika, watch the boats, and feel the history in the air. There is plenty of time to explore slowly, take photos, and enjoy the quiet beauty of the lake and its surroundings. After the tour, you return to your lodge in Kigoma town to relax, watch the sunset over the lake, and reflect on your journey through this fascinating part of Tanzania.
DAY 10: Departure Day
Kigoma to Kilimanjaro International Airport
Today marks the end of your western Tanzania adventure. After breakfast, you check out of your lodge in Kigoma and transfer to the airport for your flight back to Kilimanjaro International Airport. The flight gives you a final chance to enjoy aerial views of Lake Tanganyika, green hills, and the countryside below.
Upon arrival at Kilimanjaro International Airport, you connect with your onward flight or begin your journey home. This day is mostly travel, but it is also a moment to reflect on your unforgettable safari, from chimpanzee trekking in Gombe and Mahale, to cultural moments in Kigoma and Ujiji.
