Arusha - Mount Kilimanjaro

About This Tour

The Rongai Route is one of the quieter and more scenic ways to climb Mount Kilimanjaro, approaching the mountain from the remote northern side near the Kenyan border. This route is loved for its sense of wilderness, gradual ascent profile, and high chances of spotting wildlife such as antelope and monkeys in the lower forest zone. Unlike the busier southern routes, Rongai offers a peaceful trekking experience with wide open views, dry climates conditions and beautiful alpine landscapes as you gain altitude.

Typically completed in 6-7 days, the Rongai Route allows good acclimatization as climbers move steadily through varied vegetation zones-from pine forest to moorland and final the stark lunar -like alpine desert. The summit attempt is made from Kibo Hut, leading trekkers to Gilman’s Point and ultimately Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa.

The descent is usually done via the Marangu Route, giving trekkers a chance to experience two different sides of the mountain. Rongai is considered moderately difficult and is a great choice for those seeking a quieter, les crowded Kilimanjaro adventure with a strong summit success rate.

DAY 1: Arrival in Tanzania & Transfer to Arusha

Upon arrival in Tanzania at Kilimanjaro International Airport, you will be warmly welcoming by your mountain guides or safari representative and transferred by road to the lively safari town of Arusha. The driver offers a gentle introduction to Tanzania’s beautiful scenery, passing local communities, open countryside, and, on clear days, lovely views of Mount Meru in the distance.

After checking in at your hotel or lodge, you will have time to relax and freshen up before an important pre-trek briefing. Later in the day, your professional mountain guide will conduct a detailed gear checking session to make sure you have all the necessary equipment for the Kilimanjaro climb. This includes reviewing your clothing layers, sleeping bag, boots, rain protection, and other essentials. If anything is missing or unsuitable, the guide will advise on rental or purchase options in Arusha. The evening is then free to enjoy dinner, organize your daypack, and get a good night’s rest as you prepare for the exciting Umbwe Route adventure ahead.

DAY 2: Arusha (1,400m / 4,600ft) to Nalemoru Gate (2,364m / 7,756FT) to Simba Camp (2,671m / 8,763FT)

Habitat:  Montane Rainforest

Trekking Distance:  7km /4.4miles

Trekking Time:  3-4 hours

Morning breaks gently in Arusha as you set off on a scenic drive toward the quiet northern side of  Mount Kilimanjaro. The journey passes through small villages, farmland, and misty forest edges before reaching Nalemoru Gate, where the adventure officially begins. After registration and final backpack adjustments, the trail opens into wide moorland terrain dotted with giant heathers and volcanic rocks. The air feels crisp and new, and every step brings a growing sense of leaving the ordinary world behind.

The hike continues at a calm, steady rhythm toward Simba Camp, with sweeping views unfolding in all directions. Below, the plains stretch endlessly, while above, the mountain slowly reveals its rugged character. As you arrive at Camp, the silence of the highlands feels almost magical. Hot tea, fresh mountain meals, and the golden glow of sunset create a peaceful end of the day. Wrapped in warm layers under a sky bursting with stars, you drift into the alpine wilderness.

DAY 3: Simba Camp (2,671m / 8,763ft) to Kikelelwa Camp (3,600m / 11,811ft)

 Habitat: moorland

Trekking Distance:  7km / 4.4miles

Trekking Time: 6-7 hours

You wake up at Simba Camp with the mountain air feeling extra fresh and a little colder than yesterday.

After breakfast and a hot drink to get you moving, the trail rolls out into open moorland where the views seem to stretch forever. The path is mostly gentle at first, giving you time to find your pace, chat with the crew, and enjoy the quiet rhythm of walking.

Strange-looking giant plants and scattered rocks make the landscape feel almost like another planet.

As the day goes on, the climb becomes more noticeable, but it is the good kind of challenge that reminds you are really on Kilimanjaro now. The trail winds through small valleys and over ridges before finally dropping into the peaceful spot where Kikelewa Camp awaits. Tents are set, warm snacks appear, and tired legs slowly relax. With the sun fading behind the hills and the sky filling with stars, the evening feels simple, calm, and deeply rewarding.

DAY 4: Kikelelwa Camp (3,600m / 11,811ft) to Mawenzi Tarn Hut (4,315m / 14,157ft)

Habitat:   Alpine Desert

Trekking Distance:   3km / 1.9miles

Trekking Time:   3-4 hours

Morning at Kikelewa Camp feels calm and slightly chilly, the kind of fresh mountain start that wakes you up faster than any alarm. After breakfast, you begin climbing almost immediately, following a narrow trail that zigzags up open hillsides. The greenery slowly fades behind you, replaced by rocky ground and wide-open views that make you stop every few minutes just to take it all in. The sharp, dramatic towers of Mawenzi grow bigger with every step, quietly reminding you how high you are going.

The final stretch is short but steep, and suddenly the trail leads you into a hidden little world-Mawenzi Tarn Hut. The camp sits beside a small alpine lake surrounded by rugged cliffs, creating one of the most beautiful and peaceful spots on the mountain.

After settling into camp, you can relax, sip something warm, and watch clouds drift around the rocky peaks. As the sun goes down, the air turns cold but the sky comes alive with stars.

DAY 5: Mawenzi Tarn Hut (4,315m / 14,157ft) → Kibo Hut (4,720m / 15,486ft)

Habitat:  Alpine Desert

Trekking Distance:  9km / 5.6miles

Trekking Time:  5-6hours

Leaving the rocky shelter of Mawenzi Tarn behind, the morning trek opens into a huge, quiet wilderness that feels almost unreal. The trail stretches across the high saddle-a wide, dusty plain where the wind whispers and footsteps become the only sound.

With Mawenzi’s jagged towers fading slowly in the distance and Kibo’s massive summit cone standing firm ahead, the walk turns into a peaceful test of patience and steady breathing. The landscape is simple, raw, and powerful, reminding you that you are now in Kilimanjaro’s alpine desert.

Hour by hour, the silhouette of Kibo Hut grows clearer, sitting like a small outpost beneath the mountain’s final slopes. The gentle climb feels longer than it looks, but the excitement of tomorrows summit push keeps everyone moving forward. Upon arrival, you settle into camp, sip warm drinks, and take time to relax as guides brief you for the midnight ascent. As darkness falls, the mountain becomes silent and mysterious, and you crawl into your sleeping bag knowing the biggest adventure is only a few hours ahead.

Heading out under the stars, you hike slowly and steadily through the cold, silent slopes toward Uhuru Peak. The air is thin and every step feels like a small victory, but the sunrise over the crater is unforgettable. At the top, take a moment to celebrate, snap photos, and breathe in the feeling of standing on the roof of Africa.

After the summit thrill, it is time to descend back toward Horombo Hut. Stop along the way for a simple lunch to recharge, then continue through the rugged slopes and moorlands. The air feels warmer, your legs a little lighter, and every step reminds you of the incredible journey you have just conquered.
