About This Tour

The Lemosho Route feels like stepping into a secret world the mountain has been holding just for you. You enter through the lush western gate, where the forest is thick with green shadows, chirping birds, and the quiet chatter of unseen wildlife. The trail does not just climb-it unfolds like a story, twisting through rainforest, breaking into misty moorlands, and finally opening into vast alpine deserts where the horizon seems infinite. Every day brings a new rhythm: the crunch of your boots on leaves, the whistle of wind over ridges, and glimpses of icy summits peeking through clouds.

Camps like Big Tree, Shira, Barranco, and Barafu feel like tiny islands of warmth in a vast wilderness, each with its own personality. Summit night is the mountain’s grand finale-starting under a vault of stars, ascending slowly through cold, thin air, until Uhuru Peak finally rises before you in golden sunrise glory

DAY 1: Arrival in Tanzania & Transfer to Arusha

Upon arrival in Tanzania at Kilimanjaro International Airport, you will be warmly welcoming by your mountain guides or safari representative and transferred by road to the lively safari town of Arusha. The driver offers a gentle introduction to Tanzania’s beautiful scenery, passing local communities, open countryside, and, on clear days, lovely views of Mount Meru in the distance.

After checking in at your hotel or lodge, you will have time to relax and freshen up before an important pre-trek briefing. Later in the day, your professional mountain guide will conduct a detailed gear checking session to make sure you have all the necessary equipment for the Kilimanjaro climb. This includes reviewing your clothing layers, sleeping bag, boots, rain protection, and other essentials. If anything is missing or unsuitable, the guide will advise on rental or purchase options in Arusha. The evening is then free to enjoy dinner, organize your daypack, and get a good night’s rest as you prepare for the exciting Lemosho Route adventure ahead.

DAY 2: Arusha Town (1,400m / 4,600ft) to Londorossi Gate (2,100m / 6,890ft) to Mti Mkubwa (2,650m / 8,694ft)

 Habitat:  Montane Forest

Trekking Distance:  7km / 4.3miles

Trekking Time:  3-4 hours

The day begins with the soft stir of morning in Arusha, leaving behind bustling streets for the quiet pulse of the highlands. The road to Londorossi Gate winds through patchwork fields and sleepy villages, each turn offering a hint of the wilderness waiting ahead. At the gate, the world shifts-suddenly it is just you, the vast savannah, and the promise of animals wandering freely across the horizon.

From Londorossi, the walk to Mti Mkubwa Camp feels like sliding into a secret corner of the Ngorongoro highlands. The camp, sheltered beneath the massive shade of its iconic “Big Tree”, is a peaceful hideaway where the air smells of fresh earth and distant grasslands. Afternoons drift lazily here: birds flit overhead, the sun paints everything in gold, and the quiet hum of the wild reminds you that you have stepped into a rhythm entirely your own. As night falls, the sky opens into a galaxy of stars, setting the stage for the adventures that lie just beyond the camp’s borders.

DAY 3: Mti Mkubwa (2,650m / 8,694ft) to Shira 1 Camp (3,610m / 11,844ft)

Habitat:    Moorland

Trekking Distance:  7km / 4.3miles

Trekking Time:  5-6hours

The morning wakes slowly at Mti Mkubwa Camp, with the first light spilling across the highland grasses and the gentle hum of distant wildlife. After a simple breakfast, you leave the shade of the “Big Tree” behind heading toward the looming presence of Kilimanjaro. The journey begins on winding roads and dirt tracks, with sweeping views of rolling hills gradually giving way to the raw, open expanse of the Shira Plateau.

Arriving at Shira 1 Camp feels like stepping onto another world. The landscape shifts from highland greens to volcanic browns and golden moorland, wide and untamed. Tents are pitched in a quiet, windswept spot with a panorama of distant ridges and drifting clouds. The afternoon is unhurried-a chance to stretch legs, sip something warm, and soak in the silence and vastness of the high-altitude plateau. When the sun lowers behind the horizon, the sky erupts in brilliant colors, and stars begin to shimmer-your first true taste of Kilimanjaro’s magic.

DAY 4: Shira 2 Camp (3,850m / 12,631ft) to Lava Tower (4,600m / 15,092ft) to Barranco Camp (3,900m / 12,795ft)

Habitat: Moorland

Trekking Distance: 10km / 6.3miles

Trekking Time: 6-7 hours

This day brings a real sense of adventure as you leave Shira 2 Camp and slowly climb into a more rugged and dramatic part of the mountain. The trail feels wilder now-dusty paths, scattered boulders, and huge open valleys stretching far below. Walking pole pole (slowly, slowly), you make your way up toward Lava Tower, a giant dark rock rising out of the alpine desert like something from another planet.

Reaching this point is both exciting and challenging, as the altitude reminds you that Kilimanjaro is not just beautiful-it is powerful too.

After a well-earned lunch near Lava Tower, the trek changes mood completely as you begin descending toward Barranco Camp. The air feels richer and the landscape suddenly turns greener, with tall, strange-looking plants and sheltered slopes that make the mountain feel more welcoming again. The walk into camp is relaxed and scenic, often filled with laughter and quiet moments of reflection. As evening arrives, you settle in with warm food, tired legs, and a happy heart-another unforgettable Kilimanjaro day done.

DAY 5: Barranco Camp (3,900m / 12,795ft) to Karanga Camp (3,995m / 13,107ft)

Habitat:  Moorland

Trekking Distance:  6km / 3.7miles

Trekking Time:  4-5 hours

Day 5 is one of those days that makes you feel like a real mountain adventurer. After breakfast at Barranco Camp, you head straight for the famous Barranco Wall-a steep but short climb that’s more fun than scary. Your guides walk right with you, showing the easiest handholds and cheering you on, while the valley below spreads out like a giant painting.

Once over the wall, the trail rolls along high rocky ridges and open slopes dotted with weird giant plants. The air is thinner now, so you take it slow, stop often for water and snacks, and just enjoy being up so high. By midday, you drop into the quiet Karanga Valley and reach Karanga Camp. It is a cozy little spot tucked among the rocks, perfect for stretching, having a warm meal, and soaking in the view. The rest of the afternoon is easy-relaxing, laugh with your team, or just stare at the stars as the night settles over the mountain.

DAY 6: Barranco Camp (3,900m / 12,795ft) to Karanga Camp (3,995m / 13,107ft)

DAY 7: Karanga Camp (3,995m / 13,107ft) to Barafu Camp (4,673m / 15,331ft)

Habitat:  Alpine Desert

Trekking Distance:  4km / 2.5miles

Trekking Time:   3- 4 hours

Day 7 is the day you start feeling the mountain really calling you higher. After a hearty breakfast at Karanga Camp, you pack up and leave the snug little valley behind, stepping onto rocky trails that stretch upward toward Barafu Camp. The landscape starts to feel more dramatic-scree slopes, jagged rocks, and tiny scrappy plants that somehow survive the thin air. Every few steps you look back and the lower ridges stretch endlessly below you. The “pole pole” pace keeps things steady and gives your body time to catch up to the altitude.

By midday, Barafu Camp appears like a small oasis of tents on a windswept ridge. The air is crisp, the wind a little bitter, and the open rocky terrain reminds you that the real adventure is just around the corner.

Once your tent is ready, it is time to rest, eat an early meal, and double-check your gear for the late-night summit attempt. The evening feels quiet but electric-a mix of anticipation and awe under a vast sky full of stars-because tonight you are aiming for the top of Africa, and every moment now counts.

DAY 8: Barafu Camp (4,673m / 15,331ft) to Uhuru Peak (5,895m / 19,341ft) to Mweka Camp (3,100m / 10,171ft)

Habitat:  Arctic

Trekking Distance:  17.5km / 10.8miles

Trekking Time:  14-16 hours

Your summit adventure starts in the deep, cold night at Barafu Camp, where excitement mixes with a bit of nervous energy. With headlamps glowing in the darkness, you begin the slow and steady climb uphill. The air is thin, the path is quiet, and every step requires patience and determination. As you keep moving higher, the horizon begins to glow, and finally you reach the famous Uhuru Peak just in time to watch the sunrise spread across the vast African landscape. Standing at the highest point in Africa feels surreal, emotional, and deeply rewarding.

After celebrating this huge achievement with photos and warm congratulations, you begin the long descent down the mountain. The journey down feels completely different as the scenery keeps changing from icy slopes to rocky trails and later into greener, more lively surroundings. Though your legs may feel tired, your sprint is high and proud.

Eventually, you arrive at Mweka Camp, where you can finally rest, enjoy a hot meal, and reflect on the unforgettable experience of conquering Africa’s tallest mountain.

DAY 9: Mweka Camp (3,100m / 10,171ft) to Mweka Gate (1,640m / 5,381ft) to Arusha (1,400M / 4,600ft)

Habitat:   Montane Rainforest

Trekking Distance:   10km / 6.2miles

Trekking Time:   3-4hours

Day 9 is the perfect “slow-down and soak it in “day after conquering Africa’s highest peak. After one last night at Mweka Camp, you pack up and start the final stretch down the mountain. The trail is much kinder on your legs now, winding through shady forest paths, mossy trees, and little streams-a peaceful contrast to the rocky heights you climbed before.

By late morning, you reach Mweka Gate, where your guides and porters greet you with cheers, hugs, and maybe a few proud photos. The sense of “I actually did it” hits you hard as you call off the trek.

Rom here, a relaxed drive snakes back through villages, green fields, and hills to Arusha. On arrival, your lodge welcomes you with soft beds, a hearty meal, and a calm vibe.
